I am a documentarian, writer, and musician, living in Cape Town, South Africa.

I write here about politics, media and culture in South Africa, the rest of Africa, and, other places where I have lived and worked. I also cross-post any of my writings that are published elsewhere.

The title of this blog comes from one of my favorite U.S. old-time folk songs by the same name.

    Dear Ben,

I am a journalist at The Guardian newspaper in the UK and am based in Johannesburg. I loved your story about Gandhi’s house being put up for sale and have been asked to do a follow-up. I wonder if you could help me contact Nancy Ball please, or give her my details to get in touch with me? I’d be very grateful for your help.

    All the best,

    Hi Ben,
Just reading about you in the Mail and Guardian 200 Young South Africans. Congratulations! You share the page with my friend Lesley Williams.
I’ve got some ideas for a civil society lead housing initiative and I’m looking to start the conversation with a few people in the business. If you’re in Joburg and interested in chatting let me know. email: chantalmann@gmail.com
Congratulations again! … no small achievement!
